Acne occurs when hair follicles become clogged with oil and dead skin cells. It commonly appears on the face, forehead, chest, upper back and shoulders. Acne can present in various forms, such as whiteheads, blackheads, pimples, nodules and cysts. It’s essential to undertand that acne treatments vary based on the severity and type of acne.

Treatment Options for Acne

  1. Over-the-Counter Topicals

  2. Prescription Topicals

  3. Oral Antibiotics

  4. Oral Hormonal Treatments

  5. Oral Isotretinoin

  6. Acne Laser

Over-the-Counter Topicals

For mild acne, over-the0counter topical treatments may be sufficient. These include products that contain active ingredients like benzoyl peroxide, salicylic acid and alpha-hydroxy acids. They work by reducing oil production, promoting skin cell turnover, and fighting bacterial infection.

Prescription Topicals

When over-the-counter treatments are not enough, prescription topicals can be the next step. These may include retinoids, topical antibiotics, or combination therapies that reduce inflammation and prevent the growth of bacteria.

Oral Medications

Oral medications are typically used for more severe acne or when topical treatments do not yield results. Options include antibiotics, which help control bacteria and reduce inflammation and oral contraceptives, which can regulate hormones in women. Another potent medication is isotretinoin, which is used for severe cystic and scarring acne.

Acne Laser Treatment

There is a new acne treatment option available in Australia. This is the new TGA-cleared AviClear (TM) device for the treatment of mild to severe acne. It targets the sebaceous glands directly with a 1726nm wavelength offering a significant reduction in acne with three treatment sessions. It is a good option for all skin types and does not require blood tests often needed with other options.
