Latest Breakthroughs in Acne and Rosacea 2024

3 Dermatology Developments Coming Our Way in 2024

  1. Triple Action Acne Treatment: There’s a new topical gel coming out that comtains 3 ingredients combining adapalene, clindamycin and benzoyl peroxide for the treatment of acne vulgaris. The adapalene is a retinoid that normalises skin cell turnover, the clindamycin is an antibiotic that fights bacteria, and the benzoyl peroxide has both anti-bacterial and drying effects. Its a “3-in-1” approach.

  2. Encapsulated Benzoyl Peroxide: This is a cream that treats rosacea, especially the inflammatory papule and pustular variant. Traditional benzoyl peroxide can be very irritating and drying to the skin, so this encapsulated product is designed to try to avoid these side effects whilst enhancing penetration. It is especially designed for sensitive rosacea skin.

  3. Topical Minocycline Foam: Not so new overseas but we haven’t got it here yet in Australia (at least at the time of writing this blog). This topical foam preparation is designed to try to avoid systemic side effects from taking antibiotics by mouth. Studies have shown it is well tolerated and shows a reduction in the inflammatory component of rosacea.
