Cannabinoids - What's All the Buzz?

Cannabinoids and Skin Care

Cannabinoids have recently been featured in a number of research papers and are becoming an increasingly popular ingredient in skin care products. Approximately 1 out of 10 people use various forms of this for medical purposes.

So what’s all the hype about?

What are Cannabinoids?

The cannabinoid is a non-psychoactive compound found in cannabis that is derived from the plant cannabis Sativa.

Cannabinoids and the Human Body

The human body contains a complex network of cannabinoid receptors and enzymes known as the endocannabinoid receptor system (ECS). The endocannabinoids (naturally produced cannabinoids in our body) are made in the hair follicles and certain layers of the skin. They bind to various cannabinoid receptors.  Studies indicate that the ECS may play a crucial role in maintaining skin homeostasis and that the disruption of this system may lead to acne, pruritus, atopic dermatitis, skin pigmentation and also hair loss or hair growth.

Cannabinoids and Research

Though these compounds lack long-term data, several studies have reported potential therapeutic effects of cannabinoids in certain skin conditions. They potentially have important anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant properties, so they may be effective in treating various skin conditions such as atopic dermatitis, severe itching, acne, psoriasis, and eczema.

How are Cannabinoids Applied?

Cannabinoids are currently available for use on the skin and can be applied via a cream or lotion base and also as a patch - and No they won’t give you a buzz!
